his project titled “Pre-Service Student Teacher Exchange in Southeast Asia (SEA-Teacher Project) has the objectives of enabling pre-service student teachers to develop their teaching skills and pedagogy; encouraging pre-service student teachers to practice their English skills; allowing the pre-service student teachers to gain a broader regional and world view; and exposing future teachers to diverse teaching and learning situations and opportunities and the value of flexibility. 

 

            I decided to be part of the SEA Teacher Program because we were informed of the said objectives. This guaranteed me that it comes with lessons and experiences that will hone my skills and expand my horizon. However, it taught me and gave me more than that. It literally and metaphorically led me to another dimension that challenged my comfort zone yet prompted introspection, fostering me with cultural intelligence, understanding, and awareness of the beauty of our difference. I finally came face to face with the complexities and intricacies of identity, and I realized that they neither divide nor set up a barrier (which has been a long held notion); instead, they are the pillar of our interconnectedness. The juxtaposition of our identities and cultures produces a symphony of linkages as together, we wonder, know, and embrace one another’s roots. They intertwine us, dismantling preconceptions, stereotypes, biases, and prejudices. This, in return, heightened my appreciation for diversity. Diversity is often talked about and has always been identified as a problem that needs to be addressed when, in fact, it is not. Furthermore, when diversity is in, language barrier inevitably becomes part of this considered main issue.

           Through this exchange program, I was taught not just a skill but also a worldview, a consciousness that transcends geographical boundaries, equipping me with a globally aware mindset necessary for my own growth. It taught me things beyond the surface, more than I imagined, more than I thought, and more than I expected. This experience is truly a transformational journey.

 

            Therefore, this practicum experience exceeded my expectations and needs in meeting my professional development needs and personal growth. It provided a hands-on platform to apply theoretical knowledge, refine teaching skills, and gain insights into diverse classroom dynamics. The practicum effectively served its purpose in bridging the gap between theory and practice, expanding and cultivating new knowledge, gaining insights,  aligning with my aspirations to become a proficient and aware educator.
